With the recession right around the corner, this would be especially poignant if remade.

If you thought the consumerism of the 80's was bad, take a look around you, it can't get any worse than it is now.

I don't think the major studios would allow it.  It would "wake" to many people out of their mindless habits, which THEY rely on.

John Carpenter should remake this.  This time with his patented apocalyptic, hair raising, musical expertise.  And a bigger budget.

Good top ten list.

You had me worried for a second, I thought Ghost of Mars was gonna be #1!! Grin

Big Trouble was definitely great.  Another one I saw at the theatre.

And I must commend you for not putting Halloween to high up on the list.

I enjoyed Christine and Starman quite a bit.  Probably would have replaced Dark Star and EFLA on my list.

I liked your commentary as well.  Especially referring to Escape from NY as an "American frontier spirit" film.

My List:

The Thing
Assault of Precinct 13
Big Trouble In Little China
Escape From NY
Halloween
Starman
They Live
Prince Of Darkness
Christine
Vampires

Escape Artist: A Tribute to John Carpenter In Person!

This series is an Aero Theatre Exclusive!

For the past nearly four decades, director John Carpenter has created some of the most consistently entertaining and brilliantly crafted films in American cinema, from his savage urban western ASSAULT ON PRECINCT 13, through his awesome chiller HALLOWEEN and his adrenaline-fueled action epic ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK. Carpenter’s films have shown an amazing consistency, creating wickedly modern twists on traditional genres (THE THING) without losing his sense of playfulness or individuality. As his career has progressed, Carpenter has shown the range of a classical studio director, helming not only action and horror films but love stories (STARMAN) and a philosophical comedy (MEMOIRS OF AN INVISIBLE MAN). Yet for all his old-school craftsmanship, Carpenter is first and foremost a maverick with a fiercely independent sensibility and a willingness to confront contemporary America's most troubling social and political issues. In addition to his work as director, Carpenter has written the screenplays and composed the soundtrack music for almost all of his movies.

We are thrilled to welcome John Carpenter to the American Cinematheque for this weekend tribute.

I was quite surprised to read that.  How nice.

They Live is great.

I always thought an alternative music score would be kinda cool.  A traditional, ominous, Carpenter synth score, if you will.

You're right, EFLA does get better with repeated viewings.

I remember seeing it at the theatre with my childhood friend.  It was like a reunion for us.  We actually snuck into EFNY we were 12.   Our expectations were so high for the sequel.  We were hoping for that Carpenter magic.  Needless to say, we got quite bombed (pissed) immediately after the movie.  But hey, we really enjoyed getting bombed back then. Grin

I totally understand the movie now, like you said it's an homage...a parody.

Here's a little insight on EFLA (it starts at 46:20), it's a tv interview.
